Main element of STIBA are wooden sticks which can be used in multiple different games. In creating those games we were mostly driven by important factor in child’s development – balance between competition and collaboration. Workshops with children both in Denmark and Colombia showed us how kids in different cultures are dealing with winning and losing, how it can impact their relations with friends and how they perceive competition in a very collaborative environment and the opposite.

Development

Starting point

Our starting point was research about development of our target group – tweens (children from 8 to 12) which among other interesting topics showed us it’s a starting point for many internal transformations based very much on comparing to each other and creating basics of identity and emotional managment.

Process

Our process started in International School in Billund where we participated in children’s everyday play activities and later on, based on our observations, prepared workshops and fun games. Insights we got during those days made us think about something, which was not very much included in school activities, but children showed a lot of interest in it – competition.

In Colombia we based our workshops with cihildren on only couple of games. Because of constantly changing moods and almost unlimited energy children had, a lot of new games were designed on the spot, using whatever material we could find. These activities showed us that children in Colombia would benefit much more from collaborative form of play rather than plain competition. Competitivness amongst them waa very brutal, hurtful and in the end was excluding less competant participant.

Thus gave us an idea to work on this balance, to create playful artifact which would spark competetivness in Denmark and collaboration and respect for losers in Colombia. After our return to Kolding, we combined our experiences and insights, different games we create throughout the whole process and  transformed it into one, simple in form, play artifact.

As our additional goal, we aimed to make our project as cheap as possible for potential future industrial production.

Result

Final project

Set of STIBA consist of 48 sticks, supported by additional hourglass, dices and marbles packed in elegant, branded cardboard box with manual for 5 games. However, set is very flexible in terms of creating new games, thus the only limit is your creativity. Our last meeting with children from Billund showed us that kids are very eager to develop their own games as well as playing ones we have designed.

Additionally, we prepared animaated advetisment.
